The benefits of drinking smoothies are huge and one of the quickest and most effective ways to improve your health. Having studying nutrition in-depth, I’ve learned the importance of eating 10 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. By eating 10 portions of fruit and veg a day, you can lower your blood pressure, reduce your risk of a stroke, heart disease, and cancer while increasing your immunity, energy levels, and even your mood.

10 may sound like a lot, but if you start your day with a veggie and fruit-packed smoothie, you’ve already crammed in 4 or 5 portions of your daily recommended allowance (RDA), and what a great (and delicious) start to the day! How to make a smoothie

The key to making a healthy smoothie is to get the right balance of vegetables, fruit, protein, and fat. You should aim to eat 8 portions of vegetables a day and 2 portions of fruit as fruit (especially tropical fruit) contains more sugar. Yoghurt, nut butter and chia seeds are all good sources of fat and protein. My regular smoothie base is normally almond milk, spinach, kale, celery, banana, chia seeds, a spoon of almond butter and a handful of blueberries, then I add a protein or spirulina powder. They really are very quick and easy to make, and I usually prepare smoothies in bulk and them store in Mason jars for 3 or 4 days in my fridge. Then I just shake- and-go! My favourite high-performance smoothie maker is the Vitamix, although it is expensive. If you want a less costly alternative, I’d recommend the Ninja although it doesn’t blend quite so smoothly as the Vitamix.

1. Feel Fuller for Longer and Control Your Cravings

Because smoothies are full of nutrients and fibre they really do fill you up! I find if I start the day with a smoothie, I usually don’t need anything else until lunchtime. However, if I have toast and jam for breakfast, I would be hungry an hour later and be snacking before lunch. Sugary breakfasts are the worst way to start the day as they disrupt your blood sugar levels, which in turn leads to cravings for sugar a few hours later. Another tip is not to skip breakfast. It really is the best way to keep your metabolism and your body functioning optimally. And the best thing about a smoothie is you can just sip it throughout the morning. Perfect when you don’t fancy drinking the whole thing straight away!

2. Increase Nutrition

Smoothies are also a fantastic way to increase your nutritional intake and to get more greens into your diet. The health benefits of smoothies include increasing your immunity, and hydration levels while increasing your energy levels. High-speed blending also releases more antioxidants from vegetables than chewing alone which makes digestion and absorption of nutrients easier and more efficient.

As we age, our natural immunity decreases so it is important to increase our intake of nutrients and protective antioxidants. Drinking a smoothie-a-day provides us with optimal levels of nutrients and antioxidants and naturally increases our immunity.

Hydration is key for healthy skin and around 70 percent of our body is comprised of water. Another health benefit of smoothies is they can be really hydrating. Smoothies made with green vegetables which contain high levels of water plump up skin and to improve texture and tone. People who eat healthily tend to look healthier and more radiant. Think about Gwyneth Paltrow who eats a healthy, balanced diet. She always looks so rested and has a real inner and outer glow about her. Another top tip to boost hydration levels is to swap plant milk for coconut water in your smoothie. Coconut water is also rich in health-boosting electrolytes like potassium, sodium, and magnesium.

5. Alkalise Your Body

The average modern diet tends to be very acidic because it is overloaded with processed foods, alcohol, and sugar and is low in fibre. When the pH levels in our bodies become acidic it can lead to inflammation in the gut, increasing our risk of disease and food intolerances. By drinking a smoothie a day, you are increasing your body’s alkalinity. An alkaline diet reduces the acid load on your body, which in turn helps with digestion, intolerances, acid reflux, anti-ageing, brain function, and hormone balance. Another benefit of drinking alkaline smoothies is they attack free radicals in the body and may help to prevent the growth of cancer cells.

6. Up Your Intake of Fibre

The average Western diet is full of inflammatory foods while being low in fibre. This means that many people are suffering from conditions like IBS, intolerances, diabetes, and obesity, all of which can develop when we don’t eat enough dietary fibre. Making smoothies in a blender using whole pieces of fruit and vegetables means that none of the fibre is removed. Fibre plays an essential role in keeping the gut healthy while ensuring that bowel movements are regular. This is so important for our digestive system as it ensures that nutrients are properly absorbed while minimising spikes in blood sugar which can affect our energy levels.

  • 1 banana

  • 2 handfuls spinach

  • 1Tbsp chia seeds

  • 2 celery stalks

  • 1 dessertspoon almond butter
