Key Benefits of Face Yoga

Beyond 50, they say you get the face you deserve; and thinking back to some of the mad parties of my youth in the late 80s/early 90s, it’s no wonder I am not looking my best! I often hear women say that when they look in the mirror, they see their mother staring back at them. Personally, I find photos of myself a lot more shocking. In my head, I look like I did when I was 26 , but one look at a photo exposes the truth, I am middle aged – aargh!

So what options do we have? Fillers? Botox? I’ve seen many women alter their looks drastically with these methods – and they don’t always look younger or better, sometimes just very strange. There is also the worry of injecting botulinum into your system; if we take care of ourselves, exercise and eat organic foods – the thought of injecting poison in the name of beauty seems counter productive.

A great alternative therapy for turning back the clock is Face Yoga. I first became interested in Danielle Collins and her Face Yoga Method around 7 years ago. Danielle is one of the world’s leading Face Yoga Experts: she has appeared on television numerous times and been featured in countless press articles and magazines including Good HouseKeeping, The Times, Vogue and Marie Claire.  I purchased her DVD and was regularly enjoying face yoga until my trusty DVD player packed up. I had been meaning to get started again ever since, so when one of my clients, Claire, said she was training to become a face yoga coach with Danielle, I jumped at the opportunity to do a one to one session with her.

Trying the eye lift exercise

Claire began our session with a questionnaire, learning more about my face, lifestyle and problem areas, before tailoring and carrying out a bespoke one to one programme.

The first thing I noticed about our session was how similar to yoga it was. It started with a grounding meditation to relax, following through with a series of postures for the face, instead of the body. It was hugely relaxing and naturally, quite funny at times as we pulled some very strange faces!

I asked Claire to answer a few questions below, so that we could get a deeper understanding of Face Yoga and how it can help us;

What is face yoga?

Face Yoga is a natural way of looking and feeling younger and healthier with an added sense of relaxation and wellbeing. It is a combination of unique facial exercises in conjunction with face massage, face acupressure and face relaxation. It also focuses on wellbeing techniques for the mind, body and soul.

Can we really turn back the clock by exercising our face?

You will see some differences straight away! Your muscles may also feel like they have had a good workout, often feeling less tension in the face and a beautiful rosy glow. Obviously everyone is different, so the time it takes to see changes varies from person to person. As a general rule you will start to see more of a long term improvement after 2 weeks. The muscles become more sculpted, lifted and toned over time and the skin on top of the muscles also becomes tighter and firmer, so you will enjoy a smoother and more youthful appearance.

Begin looking straight ahead with your chin level. Turn your head to the right so that it is even with your right shoulder and then tilt your head backwards. Hold for six to eight seconds. Return your head to the forward position with your chin level. Turn your head to the left, even with your left shoulder. Tilt your head back and hold for six to eight seconds – repeat up to three times. This lifts and tones the neck muscles therefore firming lines and wrinkles on the side of the neck and face.

What can we expect from a Face Yoga Session?

Face Yoga Sessions combine beauty, fitness, wellness and holistic living. Choose a one to one session, App or DVD, dependent on individual preference. As well as the obvious benefits of the facial workout , time is spent teaching self massage and acupressure of the face, as well as guiding the client through a series of breathing, positive affirmation & visualisation techniques which will further enhance their whole experience and encourage them to realise the full potential and vital importance of self care.

First place your middle fingers at the beginning of your eyebrows. Start to gently tap around your eyes following the top of your eyebrow and then continue under your eye just at the top of your cheekbones. Then continue to the inside corners of your eye. Then repeat, going in the opposite direction, making little tapping motions. This is great for reducing eye wrinkles, boosting circulation and relaxing the muscles. Then with your index fingers very gently stroke just under your eyes from the nose outwards four times to warm up and relax the eye area. This helps to reduce bags and puffiness under the eyes by removing toxins and increasing blood flow and oxygen to the area.

How often do we practise?

To produce optimum results, practice just once a day for 6 days of the week as recommended by the Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method. However, like any exercise – it must fit into the client’s lifestyle. The exercises themselves are versatile, and can be done sitting up or lying down – whilst watching tv, whilst in the bath or even waiting for the kettle to boil! The important factor is to regularly incorporate them into your day.

Looking straight ahead place your finger tips on the top of your neck and lightly stroke the skin down as you tilt your head back. Bring your head back down and repeat twice more. Then jut your lower lip out as far as possible, place your fingers on your collarbone and point your chin upwards, pulling the corners of your mouth down. Hold for 4 deep breaths. This releases neck tension, tones and lift the neck area.

Any other tips?

It is sometimes difficult to fit a new exercise regime into our busy lives, but just a few minutes a day will bring you noticeable results. Try to remember that this is time for you, and when these exercises are practiced regularly, they will help you look and feel like the very best version of yourself.

Place index fingers on the outer edges of the eyebrow. Open eyes wide and pull eyebrows away from each other creating tension between the 2. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat twice more.

Danielle and Claire are both great adverts for face yoga: glowing, taught complexions and wrinkle free faces, so I am determined to keep up with my exercises. It has been great to have a bespoke routine to follow and I have noticed definite improvements: my skin looks more glowing in general and I have noticed lift around the eyes too. It’s easier than normal yoga in many ways as you can exercise different areas quickly and throughout the day, for example, 2 minutes whilst waiting for the kettle to boil or while watching your favourite TV show.

To keep up with Danielle you can follow her on TwitterYouTube and Facebook
