I’m not totally new to the healing power of flower essences as I’ve used Bach Flower Remedies (most of us have come across Bach Rescue Remedy at some point) but I was excited when my friend Lynn told me about a new range of flower essences that are handmade in Somerset. Like Bach Flower Remedies, Saskia’s Flower Essences are infused with the healing energy of flowers. The brand’s founder, Saskia Marjoram, kindly offered to send me a selection of essences to try and I jumped at the chance. Having worked with flowers for 30 years, Saskia started her green-fingered career as a professional gardener and was florist to the Prince of Wales’ before she began making flower essences in 2003.
I was so touched when my essences arrived. Beautifully hand-wrapped with such care, I immediately felt the love and positive energy of the products before I’d even tried them!
Flower essences or remedies were originally formulated in the 1920s, the most famous being Bach Flower Remedies, created by doctor and bacteriologist, Dr Edward Bach. Bach found a link between his patients’ physical ailments and their emotional states and created flower remedies to treat things like anxiety, shock, depression and grief, rather than physical symptoms such as headaches or sore throats. A qualified medical doctor and homeopath, personal illness forced him to give up his practice in London and move to the countryside, where he began a search for new medicines and treatments. He began investigating the healing properties of flowers essences and discovered that he possessed an ‘intuition’ which enabled him to identify which flowers worked for which emotional
Saskia’s remedies are made in the traditional way by infusing the flowering part in the sun. This process involves putting the flowers into spring water and allowing the sunlight to transfer the vibration of the flower into the water. This captures the flower’s energy imprint rather than a physical part of the flower, which is how they differ from essential oils. And unlike essentials, they have no aroma. They are also taken orally and not applied to the skin, by dropping a small amount of the essence under your tongue.
The idea behind the therapeutic power of flower essences is that flowers and plants all possess a unique vibrational energy which is held as a memory in water, (similar to the Reiki experiment.) By extracting the essence of a flower, it is possible to ‘capture’ that energy, then use it to tune up our own energy. Practitioners believe remedies can help us to rebalance our bodies and enhance our self-awareness. It is also thought that flower essences can bring positive change to our lives, acting as catalysts, and helping to shift negative behavioral patterns and allow healing to happen in a safe, natural and simple way. Each flower has its own therapeutic benefits and when we are in need of healing, we are intuitively drawn to particular flowers and plants.
Flower remedies are safe and easy to use – and can even be given to children and, believe it or not – pets! Compatible with prescription and over-the-counter medicines and homeopathy, they are safe to use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. You can take up to 7 essences at the same time.
Saskia’s essences are available in three types – Single Essences made from one flower, Combination Essences made from up to 7 flowers and Essence Sprays. Bespoke personal blends of up to 5 individual essences are also available to order.
I don’t know about you, but it’s probably been over 10 years since I felt sexy and gorgeous, so this essence was an interesting one for me to try. Was my inner diva still alive deep down inside? I hoped so! Saskia’s combination essences are carefully blended to have maximum impact. Sexy and Gorgeous contains 6 flower essences: Potentilla, Wisteria, Gorse, Dandelion, Buttercup and Crab Apple.
Created to increase self-love and intimate expression, to boost confidence and to allow us to feel liberated. It has just won ‘Editor’s Choice’ in the International Beauty Shortlist Awards, so my expectations were high!
Did it work? Flower essences can work immediately, or it may take a few weeks before you experience any positive changes, especially if the issue is deep rooted. In my case, I would say it took a couple of weeks to notice a shift. I’m not sure if it was the spring sunshine on my face that helped too, but I definitely had a couple of ‘I’m worth it moments’ where I felt in charge of myself and very confident.
Saskia blended this remedy specifically to improve social interaction, reduce panic attacks and dispel fear in new situations. It’s perfect for those situations when you feel out of your comfort zone. Currently going through hormonal changes, I’m getting increasingly panicky about routine things that I’ve done all my life. Whether I’m gripped by the fear of travel or anxious about motorway driving, anything that puts me outside my comfort zone has the potential to throw me off balance. Did it work? I’ve always been a person to push myself through any boundaries that I face, and I believe that sometimes you just need the right tools for the job! Always on the look out for natural alternatives, especially to help with anxiety, it
was fortuitous that Saskia’s remedy landed right on my lap when I least expected it and most needed it. Taking this remedy has definitely shifted something. My partner was talking about holidays, and I was much more open to the suggestion of travel than I have been recently. The hormonal changes I’ve been experiencing have also reduced my confidence, making everyday things seem unachievable, so it was great to get back to my ‘normal’ self again. Although I have always been a very calm person, I have experienced periods of high anxiety too, so having this little bottle to carry around is reassuring for anyone who suffers from feelings of panic.
Saskia has also harnessed the healing potential of flower essences in mist form. Sprays are a great way of diffusing the essences into your immediate environment to clear negative energy and bring about positive changes. Made by adding flower essences to hydrosols – flower waters produced by distilling fresh fruits, flowers and other plants With similar properties to essential oils, Saskia also makes her own hydrosols which have the aromatic qualities of essential oils and the vibrational properties of flower essence. I tried My Personal Space, another award-winner. Created for anyone who is susceptible to bullying, and for people who work in offices, it’s also ideal if you are going to be in crowded places, taking a long-haul flight and travel on buses, and trains and for anyone with ‘weak’ boundaries, something I need to work on. I avoid confrontation, as I hate the thought of being disliked, and this often makes my opinions very ‘grey’. I have also lived with and experienced passive bullying in my personal life, do I felt that this spray was something that I could benefit from. Did it work? I sprayed Personal Space Spray around my bedroom and office whenever I felt I needed a boost – and waited to feel the change. It did make me feel more empowered and confident to stand my ground and I will continue to use this essence daily as this is as aspect of myself that have been meaning to address for a long time. I also sprayed the mist directly onto my face to ‘refresh’ myself after a morning of dealing with difficult people. I definitely felt invigorated and ready to get on with my day within no time.
Whether you’re looking for relief from anxiety, help for insomnia and restless or general protection from everyday stresses and strains, there’s a flower essence for you – and for your family members and pets. They’re a great holistic addition to any natural medicine cabinet, safe to use daily, and as and when you need them – and perfect to pop in your handbag when you need a boost or some extra support.
DO THEY WORK? – It’s a YES from me!
