10 Ways to Get Naturally Glowing Skin
1. Eat Clean
Glowing skin starts from within and what we eat plays a vital role in how our skin looks. Skin texture, elasticity and overall health are all affected by how nutrient-packed and antioxidant-rich our diets are. If you want plumper, more radiant skin, cut down on processed foods, refined sugar, alcohol, caffeine and smoking and boost your intake of skin superfoods.
- Eat plenty of avocados which contain healthy fats that keep skin moisturised from the inside.
- Up your intake of blueberries which are packed with antioxidants to protect and repair skin.
- Sprinkle your cereal with flaxseeds which are loaded with Omega-3 Fatty Acids to combat acne and reduce redness and irritation.
2. Keep Hydrated
Water plays an important role in skin health, but it’s more important to hydrate properly rather than to drink gallons of water that only ends up putting pressure on your bladder and flushing out all those skin-enhancing minerals! I love my Berkey Water Filter as it filters out toxins without removing the beneficial minerals.
I focus on drinking regular sips of water (rather than large amounts) throughout the day as I find that I absorb the water better this way. Keep hydrated with a portable water bottle like Hydrate taking regular sips of water at intervals. And don’t forget that there are plenty of foods that can contribute to our hydration levels too. Leafy greens, fruits and even soup can all help to keep us hydrated.
3. Eat Your Greens
Kale and spinach have a rich supply of antioxidants that can help reduce skin inflammation and help you get glowing skin naturally. Kale is also rich in lutein which is great for eye health, keeping skin hydrated and maintaining elasticity. Dark leafy greens also detoxify the liver, which in turn de-toxes the skin. These are so simple to add to your diet through juicing or smoothies. Find all my Green Smoothie recipes here.
4. Invest in Natural and Organic Skincare Products
Swapping to natural skincare is not just better for our skin, it also benefits our health and wellbeing – and is kinder to the planet too. If you want to get glowing skin naturally, opting for skincare with naturally derived, plant-based and organic ingredients not only helps to improve radiance, it also reduces the risk of skin irritation and redness. And as skin is absorbent, ingredients can be absorbed into our bodies, so it’s better for our top-to-toe health to use products free from potentially harmful chemicals and additives. 5. Take a Collagen Supplement
If you really want to make your skin glow naturally, it’s worth investing in a collagen supplement. Collagen, especially one that contains hyaluronic acid, not only helps keep the skin hydrated, but it also helps with the skin’s elasticity, making it look plumper and appear more youthful. Collagen also contains amino acids which keep skin looking smoother too. Discover why I use Modere Collagen Supplement to get glowing skin here.
6. Wear an SPF
After my brush with skin cancer earlier this year, I have realised that now, more than ever, we need to protect our skin from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. My personal opinion is that although we need regular exposure to sunlight to optimise vitamin D production, the irreversible damage we have done to the ozone layer has meant an increase in the level of ultraviolet radiation we are exposed to. This means that our skin’s natural protection – the melanin pigment – requires additional help to protect skin from sun damage.
Wearing an SPF provides that extra protection, helping to prevent burning, reduce the risk of skin cancer and slow down the visible signs of aging. One of my favourite sunscreens is Organii Sun Milk Cream SPF 50 which is suitable for all skin types, is vegan-friendly and Certified Organic.
7. Get Some Exercise
If you really want to get your glow back, move more! Exercise boosts your blood circulation, sending more nurturing nutrients and oxygen into your skin to nourish cells. Increasing blood flow also helps to flush away waste products to make skin look clearer. And another bonus: exercise reduces stress, improves how long and how deeply your sleep and firms and tones skin to improve its appearance! Find my favourite ways to exercise here.
8. Reduce Your Stress Levels
Most of us run on adrenaline, too much caffeine – and endless ‘to do’ lists! That may keep us busy, but the cost of being productive is harsh on our body and on our skin. The pace of life is so fast now as we are pushing ourselves to do better, make more money, and to achieve as much as possible. But all this comes at a cost. Fatigue, dull skin and disturbed sleep are just a few of the negatives.
Counteract all that rushing around by making some time in your day to meditate, journal and just wind down. Taking regular breaks to allow yourself to rest and setting aside self-care days are also easy ways to re-boot. And most importantly – don’t feel guilty about being kind to yourself!
9. Get Plenty of Sleep!
It’s official! Good sleep = good skin! Researchers have shown that people who get good quality, regular sleep age visibly slower – and have less lines and wrinkles – than those who are sleep deprived. So, getting plenty of sleep really does improve your skin! As we sleep, our skin cells repair damage caused by UV light and exposure to pollution, while rebuilding the collagen and elastin fibres which give skin its plump, springy appearance.
In fact, a study in the journal Clinical and Experimental Dermatology found that people who slept seven to nine hours a night had skin that was more hydrated than those who slept five hours or less. Sleep deprivation can also increase the risk of eye bags, dark circles and puffiness. If you are not getting enough sleep, try a nighttime routine to help you wind down and get ready for a good night’s sleep.
10. Try Gua Sha
I love my Gua Sha facial tool. It’s so quick and easy to use and gets my skin glowing skin in minutes! Gua Sha also increases circulation and blood flow to the skin and boosts lymphatic drainage too. The action of “scraping the skin” also ‘pushes’ the face oil into the skin to improve hydration. Gua Sha is also great for improving skin elasticity, reducing wrinkles and sagging, and can help to calm acne and rosacea-prone skin. Find my step by step guide to gua sha here.
