It’s officially the countdown to the party season and as I’m getting older, I am feeling a lot less confident about my looks. As I look in the mirror, I hardly recognise the woman I see; in my head I am still the girl I used to be, but the mirror (or the enemy) shows me something quite different. Parties and events can make me feel quite anxious, and something quite trivial, like wearing the wrong outfit, can completely ruin my evening. When I was a younger woman I could wear anything, and talk to anyone. These days I am a lot more conscious of how I look, which in turn leaves me a lot less confident, and also a bit nervous to go to these events.

Make up does help with this, but it’s easy to get stuck in a rut, not knowing what to use, or how to change it. I’ve been wearing the same style of make up for over 20 years, so I do think it’s time for a change. That hard black eyeliner and bright red lipstick must finally hit the dustbin! So I decided to call in top make up artist Emily Rose Braithwaite to give me some make up tips.

Make Up Look 1 – Natural Daytime Look

I asked Emily to show me a make up look I could wear to work, something that helped me look healthy and glowing, without looking too heavy or overloaded. Sometimes when I apply make up, it either looks washed out in an hour, or it looks caked on! Learning these tips from Emily has really helped me ramp up my make up game. I also enjoyed learning the facial massage techniques Emily showed me here too; these were originally developed by Nichola Joss, a celebrity skin care expert, and I am now regularly using them, and find they bring a real glow to my skin.

What do you think? I couldn’t believe the difference it made! My skin looked so dewy and natural, and I looked smart without looking too made up. I liked the tip with the highlighter too; I definitely don’t want to highlight my undereye wrinkles, I just want to look radiant. I loved this look and I’ve been trying to replicate it every day since. I have had a lot of people saying I look well, so I must be doing something right!

Make Up Look 2 – Evening look

In this video Emily shows me how to turn daytime make up into an evening look. This will be great for anyone working in the daytime, that has to go to their Christmas work do, or a party straight after work. There are some great tips to help you turn day into evening. I do think you need to wear slightly heavier make up in the evenings because of lighting, but sometimes it’s difficult to know how to, without overdoing it. This look was shot in vertical format as Emily wanted to post it on her Instagram IGTV, so the format might look a bit different to the one above.

What do you think? Again I absolutely loved this look – I was amazed by the technique where she lifted my eyes – that was just incredible! I felt it took years off me; it’s amazing the difference good make up can make. I was so happy with my make up that day, I really felt a million dollars! It’s true what they say, if your hair and make up are good, you really do feel better about yourself. I really felt party ready, and I could have gone to a party that evening feeling so much more confident and happier with my appearance.
