Ditch plastic straws – and grab a Shlurple!
Hands up if you feel increasingly disgusted about the way we have abused Mother Earth and mistreated the wildlife we share this planet with? Me too!
Climate change, environmental pollution, microplastics and vast amounts of waste produced and tossed away – are just a few of the ecological disasters we’ve helped to create.
But the only way to improve things is to turn our negative emotions into positive action. Go out and do something about it! We can all do our bit by making changes to our own consumer habits. Especially by rejecting plastic wrapping in the supermarket, shopping locally and buying directly from farm shops and farmers’ markets. In addition, we can also try making zero-waste swaps at home

Marine pollution and the problem of plastic in the oceans is one of the biggest challenges our planet faces. Thankfully, there are a growing number of individuals and companies taking positive action to reduce plastic waste and to help us change our habits. Especially when it comes to buying disposable items like straws and cutlery that either end up in landfill, discarded on the street, or in the sea where they are increasingly putting marine life at risk.
That’s the driving force behind the re-usable straw company, Shlurple, a range of zero-waste and eco-friendly products. The company was founded by Sam Purvis after she saw a video that had gone viral featuring a turtle having a plastic straw removed from its nose – ouch!
Brought up by the sea, and with fond memories of it, Sam saw this as an opportunity to give back and make a difference. Shlurple’s mission is not only to make affordable eco-friendly products, but they also donate a percentage of their profits to WWF. (Check out their Adopt a Turtle programme.) On top of that, they are also working towards funding turtle sanctuaries in Thailand and the Far East to support the work that they do in protecting these increasingly endangered species.
The first product in the Shlurple range, this reusable straw is a brilliant buy – and totally user-friendly. Made from 4 stainless steel sections that snap together via an inner silicone tube, the straw folds down neatly into its own little container box that’s both practical and pretty. And it fits perfectly into your handbag like a lipstick!
I keep it in my bag at all times, so I can take it out and use it when I’m in a bar or restaurant. I don’t know why we like drinking out of straws, but we do! So this straw means we can still enjoy our drink without harming marine life. Once I’m at home, I simply rinse my Shlurple straw out, dry it and pop it back into my bag for next time. Easy and eco-friendly in one! Purchase one here.
I was so impressed with my straw that I went on to buy Shlurple’s Pink ‘n’ Toolbox- collapsible cutlery set, made from wheat composite reclaimed from agricultural waste. Like the straw, the fork, spoon and chopsticks are cleverly designed to fold down into a small container.
When I’m out and about, I can eat my pre-made pack lunch, or buy a takeaway or shop-bought lunch without worrying about using single-use plastic cutlery. Available in pink or green (I bought the pink set), it’s very reasonably priced at just £8.21. Purchase one here.
As I’ve been talking about these products on my Instagram, Shlurple very kindly sent me their brand new products to try too!
Again another very user-friendly and economic product! I love how this Green ‘n’ SQUOFFEE cup collapses down flat so that it can fit easily into my handbag. Made from silicone and recyclable PP, it has a 350ml capacity. Perfect for my oat milk latte!
I leave it in my bag so that when I’m out and about, I can order a coffee or herbal tea to go without worrying about the impact on the environment. Previously, I had a stainless steel flask but it was quite bulky to carry around and took up a huge amount of room in my bag, so I’m delighted with my new space-saving cup. Purchase one here.
I’m so happy that Shlurple also sent me their Pink ‘n’ Chowie cutlery and lunch box set to review (it also comes in green and natural) as I now have the full matching set! The Chowie Box is ideal for packed lunches as it comes with fork and spoon too.
I prefer taking my own lunch to work, and I can throw everything into this handy box. I love the fact it has several compartments so I can separate out my salad or take snacks. It snaps shut firmly, so nothing can escape or leak. Ideal for chucking in your bag without worrying about spills! On top of that, it is freezer and microwave safe too. Purchase one here.
I enjoy purchasing products from a small independent business, especially one with such a worthwhile mission in mind!
