Hands up if you’ve got bundles of unused make-up brushes because you don’t know what they’re for? Well, guess what? You’re not the only one! And when it comes down to it, you can do pretty much everything with just 7 well-designed brushes to apply foundation, blusher, eyeshadow, lashes, and brows. Another revelation? You definitely don’t need to spend a fortune either. Especially now as there are so many make-up brush brands that are not only affordable but also ethical and eco-friendly. Yay!
I was thrilled to be sent a selection of 7 make-up brushes by So Eco, an eco-friendly brush brand accredited by PETA. Cruelty-free and vegan-friendly, So Eco’s makeup brushes are all about lowering the impact on the environment with products and packaging solutions that are 100% ethically and responsibly sourced. An ethos that I’m totally on board with. Not only are So Eco brushes and tools really affordable, but they are also easy-to-use, well-designed, and apply make-up perfectly. As well as an added bonus: they come in recyclable and bio-degradable packaging.
This week, I’m joined by two of my favourite make-up artists – Dani Guinsberg and Frances Prescott. As well as road-testing the brushes myself, I’ve asked Dani and Frances for their tips on how to get the most out of these must-have So Eco make-up brushes. Especially to proof that you really can do-it-all with 7 basic brushes!
So Eco Foundation Brush
This So Eco makeup brush has been designed for easy application of both liquid and powder foundations. Made from sustainable bamboo, recycled aluminum, and cruelty-free Taklon bristles, it’s really easy to handle. The coloured tip allows you to see how much product you’ve got on your brush so you don’t end up applying too much!
I normally use my fingers and get in a mess! So this brush really helped me get a smoother, more even finish plus it’s much less messy to use!
Frances says: “ I’ve always preferred to use a brush for applying foundation as I find sponges soak up too much product. So Eco’s Foundation Brush is tapered to give you greater control for application and coverage. As well as helping you to apply make-up to those ‘hard to get into areas’ around your nose. It’s equally important to keep your foundation brush scrupulously clean to ensure your foundation is the right colour, looks ‘fresh’, and of course, to keep skin healthy and bacteria-free!”
Tip: “When I’m using the brush with liquid foundation or tinted moisturiser, I apply the product to the back of my hand and ‘mix’ a couple of shades of foundation to colour match it to my skin. I always apply foundation to the centre of my face first, working outwards”
Dani says: “This So Eco makeup brush is a fabulous brush for applying any liquid, cream or powder foundation. It blends the product beautifully into the skin.”

So Eco Multi-tasking Brush
So Eco’s Multi-tasking Brush is definitely a desert-island essential! A brush to have with you at all times, you can use it to apply liquids and powders and to achieve a smooth, even-looking finish. The hand-cut head ensures flawless application, while the coloured tip allows you to see the amount of product on the brush. Use it to dust powder on to set your make-up, or to precisely apply bronzer and highlighter to create a radiant glow.
I find this brush works really well, the bristles are soft and the handle is a great shape! Importantly for me, it’s a lovely high quality too!
Frances says: “ A true multi-tasking hero! This So Eco makeup brush is ideal for contouring (we called it shading in my day!), buffing on bronzer and blusher or for finishing and setting make-up with a light dusting of powder.”
Dani says: “This multi-tasking brush is a brilliant brush for buffing your base to achieve a flawless finish. Perfect for applying cream blush to the apples of your cheeks for a fresh, outdoorsy glow”.

So Eco Duo Brow Brush Set
This neat little brush duo can be used to groom brows and to apply powder or cream to fill-in and emphasise. The angled brush is perfect for precision application, grooming, and blending, while the high-quality spoolie brush is ideal for taming and grooming unruly brows to create a more defined, fuller, and thicker look.
As a result of lockdown, my eyebrows were crying out to be tamed! This set is so easy to use and without a doubt, really well priced too!
Frances says: “ The firm angled brush can be used to shape brows and to add colour from a gel or powder or to blend/shape if you’re using a pencil. The spoolie is super for brushing through the brows to create your preferred shape. And it can also be used to top up mascara and brush through your lashes.”
Dani says: “ A two brush combo perfect for applying eyebrow powder. Because of the sharp angle of the brush, it’s easy for you to trace along your natural eyebrow hairs to achieve the perfect shape. You can also use the spoolie to brush through your brows to achieve a natural look. For clump-free lashes, use the spoolie after applying mascara to separate lashes.”
So Eco Double-Ended Eyeshadow Brush Set
There’s literally no look that you can’t achieve with the help of these double-ended brushes! Hand-cut and trimmed to create the perfect shape, each brush allows you to create a multitude of effects, from soft and smoky shading to precise lining and defining.
Thanks to Dani I’ve become a wizard at applying eyeshadow! Dani gave me a makeup lesson live on Instagram during lockdown which was such fun! If you would like a makeup lesson with Dani on a zoom link book HERE. Follow her Beauty Page for more info.
Frances says: “ Use the eyeshadow brush to apply primer and colour to the lids, while the angled brush is perfect for gel or liquid eyeliners. The angle makes it easy to create an extended ‘flick’ of eyeliner too. Normally, I use the rounded brushed for building up colour across the lid. Then the tapered end to shade in the crease and outer corners of the eye.”
Dani says: “The dome-shaped brush is great for applying eyeshadow in the socket line to enhance your eye shape, while the flat brush can be used to apply eyeshadow to the lids using a ‘press and blend’ technique. For more graphic looks – feline flicks and to define your lower lashes, the sharp-angled brush is ideal. Whereas, the soft-angled brush is great for general eyeshadow blending. “
So Eco Large Eyeshadow Brush
The perfect blending and shading brush for specifically applying colour and contour to the eyelids! So Eco’s generously-sized Eyeshadow Brush is also perfect for applying highlighter.
Firstly it’s very easy to use, I’ve never tried a brush this size before! Best of all I found it especially quick to create looks with too.
Frances says: “ This is a brilliant all-round eyeshadow applicator – ideal for primer and shadow application. I especially love big fat eyeshadow brushes when I’m going for a ‘pop’ of colour across the lids!”
Tip: “Load the brush with colour, tap off any excess and sweep it across the lids for a quick and easy wash of colour.”
Dani says: “ A very versatile brush that can be used for both powder and cream eyeshadows. Also great for applying colour to the whole lid for super-speedy eyes!”
