Welcome back to Natalie Loves, a regular round-up of my favourite hair, beauty, and lifestyle products! This month, I’m sharing my current natural and sustainable haircare must-haves.
A good indicator of our inner health and wellbeing, the condition of our ‘crowning glory’ can reveal if we’re stressed out, have a hormonal imbalance, or suffering from certain vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
Strong, shiny bouncy hair is usually a sign that we’re in good health, while brittle, lank, or thinning hair can be a warning sign that our diet is lacking in essential nutrients or that we’re under high levels of stress. Of course, there are other factors that can account for hair that’s in poor condition. Over-colouring and excessive use of heated appliances like straighteners and tongs could be one. But as a rule of thumb, if you are experiencing significant hair loss or breakage, always seek advice.
Why we should avoid haircare products that contain sulphates, synthetic perfume or parabens
Research has shown these common ingredients used in haircare (and skincare) that are best avoided.
- Parabens – Commonly used to preserve skin, hair, and make-up products, parabens have been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues.
- Sulphates – Used in haircare for their lathering and oil-cleansing properties, sulphates also tend to strip our hair and scalp of their natural, conditioning oils, causing dryness, flakiness, and breakage.
- Synthetic perfume – In some cases, fragrance can be an irritant and can increase the risk of allergic reactions. It has also been linked to respiratory problems such as asthma.
My Favourite Natural and Sustainable Haircare Products
We Are Paradoxx
We Are Paradoxx are a sustainable haircare brand that offer clean, natural environmentally-friendly products. All WAP formulations contain between 88% to 97% natural and organic ingredients and are free- from sulphates, synthetic perfumes, and parabens. The whole range is packaged in recyclable aluminum, is 90% plastic-free, and all the ingredients used are sustainably sourced. We are Paradoxx are also PETA and Leaping Bunny approved, vegan, and cruelty-free.
We Are Paradoxx Super Natural Shampoo
Enriched with Hops and Nettle extracts to help boost bounce and volume, WAP Supernatural Shampoo lathers well and gently removes daily grime, impurities, and excess oils. This lovely nourishing shampoo doesn’t strip the hair but still cleanses it effectively. (Some natural shampoos don’t always lather well or leave hair feeling clean). I have combination hair – greasy at the roots and dry at the tips – and this sorts out both issues! Plus, I find my hair is really easy to comb afterwards and it looks so shiny too.
We Are Paradoxx 3- in-1 Secret Weapon Conditioner
A real multi-tasker, this 95% natural conditioner can also be used as a leave-in treatment and a finishing balm to smooth and de-frizz. Ideal for natural or coloured hair, WAP’s Secret Weapon Conditioner is enriched with Irish Carrageen Moss that will help your hair look glossy and frizz-free. Absolutely perfect for naturally curly or wavy hair as you can use it as a leave-in conditioner which doubles as a styling cream. It also smells really ‘sweet’ (almost like lemon sherbet). A real winner!
And the Hangover Hair Elixir is an absolute must-have for the festive season to perk-up post-party hair!

Lani Tropical Hair Treatment
I’m a big fan of Lani, a green hair and beauty brand founded in 2014. Creators of vegan, cruelty-free, and natural products that are also eco-friendly. All Lani products are packaged into glass bottles and jars and made with high quality and food-grade ingredients. This sustainable haircare range is free from parabens, synthetic fragrances, silicones, mineral oils, and animal-derived extracts.
This small bottle really packs a punch as it is totally versatile. Use it as an overnight conditioning mask, a pre-shampoo treatment, or sparingly (just a few drops) as a frizz-taming serum. Enriched with hydrating coconut and strengthening Kukui extracts, Lani Tropical Hair Treatment will restore shine and re-hydrate parched, dry hair. It also helped to restore my hair’s elasticity, calm my frizz, and soothe my scalp.
A triple whammy! Especially good as a fuss-free overnight treatment as the light oil is quickly absorbed and doesn’t feel overly oily. And the icing on the cake is that the delicious, tropical scent reminds me of holidays. Hurrah! One of the most popular sustainable haircare products around.
Hair Gain Now
Apparently, trichologists have reported a dramatic rise in hair loss cases as a result of Coronavirus. Triggered directly by the illness or indirectly through lockdown stress and anxiety, a disturbance in the hair cycle causes the hair to shift from the growing phase to the shedding phase, resulting in hair loss. With over 8 million women in the UK suffering from hair loss at some point in their lives, it’s more common than you might think. Hair loss and thinning can also be a sign of hormonal changes, most commonly occurring after childbirth and during menopause. But the good news is there are plenty of things you can do if your hair starts to thin, so don’t panic! Read more about hair loss here.
Hair Gain Now
If you have noticed that you are losing more hair than usual or that your hair is looking less luxuriant than usual, Hair Gain Now is a natural haircare solution. This brand new hair-boosting supplement contains organic pea shoot and has been formulated to stimulate the molecules within your hair follicles to kick-start hair growth. What’s more, in an AnaGain clinical study, this powerful ingredient was shown to contribute to a 78% increase in hair growth, while 86% of users noticed a significant improvement in their hair.
Hair Gain Now comes in capsule or gummy form, both of which are vegan, vegetarian, and halal approved. I love the delicious Hair Gain Now Gummies as they taste like apples, so they are more like a sweet treat than a supplement! This also means that I’m more likely to take them regularly and to make them part of my daily hair and beauty routine. Although I haven’t experienced hair loss so can’t comment on their success for stimulating regrowth, I have noticed that my hair feels much healthier, stronger, and easier to manage!

With all the ingredients locally-sourced from British farms, Shrub is a new vegan haircare range inspired by the English countryside. Shrub’s sustainable haircare range is also free from liquid and micro-plastics, synthetic fragrances, and silicones. Therefore, making it healthier for your hair and healthier for the planet.
Shrub Heat Protection Spray
Something that many of us either forget about or neglect to do is to use a heat protector when we blow-dry or use heated styling appliances. But just like using an SPF to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun, our hair needs protection too. A heat protector forms a protective barrier around the hair cuticle – the outer protective layer – to protect from the heat of your hairdryer and styling tools. And also helps to fight off free radical damage caused by UV light too.
Shrub Heat Protection Spray is a fine mist that can be sprayed onto wet hair as a detangler, as a ‘prep’ spray, or a heat protector. Formulated with moisturising Lunaria oil from the honesty plant and botanical extracts of nettle, elderflower, and willow, this spray leaves hair feeling soft, looking shiny, while still protecting it from the elements. And at just £10, it is competitively priced too!
Shrub Botanical Wonder Oil
A lightweight oil that is perfect for smoothing flyaways after styling, Shrub Botanical Wonder Oil also smells delicious too! Formulated with celery extract to soothe flaky scalps, it also helps to boost shine and nourish your hair. For some hair-enhancing TLC, massage a few drops it into your hair and scalp to hydrate parched hair and to stimulate healthy hair growth. With Lunaria oil derived from the honesty plant, and botanical extracts of nettle, elderflower, and willow, this hair oil will leave your hair looking the best it has ever looked! It’s quite a ‘dry’ oil so you don’t need to worry about greasy roots and a little bit of oil goes a long way. I normally only use a couple of drops to smooth my frizz and to help keep my flyaway hairs in check.
Natural and Sustainable Haircare
Dolores & Rose Bars
Mettalife is a lovely ethical vegan supermarket run by mother and daughter who specialise in natural and sustainable boutique brands. They are also very kindly donating £2 for every £15 spent in October to Breast Cancer Awareness. (Not to be confused with my biggest bugbear, Cancer Research, who still test on animals and only test for pharmaceutical cures. Grrrr!)
I’m not usually a fan of shampoo bars, probably as it goes against my professional hairdressing training! Normally, I have found that shampoo bars don’t really wash my hair well, are hard to rinse out, and leave my hair feeling a bit ‘yuk’! However, as I can see the importance of reducing plastic and why people want to use them, I have literally tried hundreds in the name of research!
And I’m pleased to report that Dolores & Rose Shampoo and Conditioner Bars are the only ones I quite like! Formulated with organic rooibos tea, lavender, and rosemary essential oils, the bars smell gorgeous and the packaging is so pretty!
The Shampoo Bar lathers well and I found it easy to use and rinse out. The Conditioner Bar did a pretty good job too, leaving my hair easy to comb out and looking shiny too. So, maybe I can be converted over to bars!

Jason Jojoba and Castor Oil Shampoo and Conditioner
JASON has been one of the leading retailers of pure and natural products since 1959! Their mission is to make the best and most effective natural products that are environmentally-friendly alternatives to mass-produced, synthetic chemical products. All their products are sustainably sourced and infused with natural botanical extracts, vitamins, and minerals. If your hair is prone to breakage or is very dry, this jojoba and castor oil-infused range could be your new best friend! Even more importantly, the packaging is bio-degradable and packaged in recycled and/or recyclable containers.
The main ingredients, jojoba and castor oil, are renowned for their moisurising and conditioning properties. In addition, castor oil has been shown to enhance hair health and promote growth. Both the Conditioner and Shampoo are also enriched with Coconut oil, strengthening Pro-Vitamin B5 and Quinoa Protein which help to prevent breakage and split ends.
As the name suggests, this natural haircare range has been specifically created to nourish and nurture dry or frizzy hair. Not only do the products help to prevent up to two times breakage, but they also improve the condition and stimulate growth. I love the consistency of the shampoo as it really feels syrupy thanks to the castor oil, so my hair and scalp felt so nourished. I have fine hair and it wasn’t too heavy but left my hair feeling soft, shiny, and well-conditioned.
