A growing number of us are waking up to the fact that it really does matter where our beauty products come from, how they are made, what ingredients they contain – and how they’ve have been tested. Until recently, vegan beauty products have had unglamorous reputation, and didn’t always perform as well as mainstream products. But things have changed for the better! 4 years ago, I predicted that in the future, all beauty products would be cruelty-free – and I’m delighted that it looks like my prediction was right, especially as it’s been proven that we don’t need to test on animals to ensure products are safe. With 3.5 million vegans in the UK alone, and many more who are following plant-based and ethical lifestyles, there is a huge demand for vegan make-up and skincare, and in response, beauty has finally turned a huge corner.

What’s the difference between cruelty-free and vegan?

As a rule, a ‘cruelty-free’ product is not animal-tested and should be free from animal ingredients (although it may contain beeswax or similar derivatives). Vegan beauty products, however, are free from animal-derived ingredients, but they may not be 100% cruelty-free, so it’s a good idea to check that products are both cruelty-free and vegan! Check labels for accreditations like the Cruelty-Free Leaping Bunny, The Vegan Society or PETA.

Best Vegan Makeup Brands UK

I’ve been on the lookout for the best vegan makeup brands in the UK, and have enlisted the help of some of my favourite make-up artists and beauty experts. With recommendations from Dani Guinsberg, Frances Prescott, Donna Francis AKA The Beauty Ed and my friend, Charlotte, lifestyle and beauty blogger, Everinmay, I’ve compiled a list of high-performance, 100% vegan make-up marvels!

8 Vegan Makeup Products You Can’t live Without!

Elf 16HR Camo Concealer

Recommended by beauty expert Donna Francis, this moisturising concealer is rich in super-moisturising Avocado Oil. It’s so easy to apply and blend, perfect for make-up amateurs like myself! I also love the fact that there is such a wide range of shades making it easy to find the perfect match for your skin tone. Perfect for covering blemishes, redness and dark shadows, it is so hydrating and never dries out. Check it out on Amazon where it has received over 10,000 glowing reviews! And at the bargain price of £5, it is unbeatable value!

‘This concealer has a creamy, long-lasting texture that is worthy of a luxury brand,’ says Donna. ‘The whole Elf range is 100% vegan is so affordable.’

Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer

If you’re after flawless skin, look no further! With an SPF of 15, Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer is an award-winning primer with a silk-like texture that creates a smooth, glass-like finish for your foundation. It really helps to minimise my redness and conceals fine lines without looking cakey. With a lovely lightweight feel, my foundation glides on and stays in place and lasts the whole day. At £54, it’s an investment, although if you live in the US, it’s $54, which makes it a lot more affordable.

‘All Hourglass products are amazing, but their Veil Mineral Primer is the ‘Holy Grail’ for me,’ says Charlotte. ‘It just makes skin look poreless, even before you apply foundation. Expensive but worth every penny!’

It Foundation

My friend Dani (make-up artist on How to Look Good Naked) recommended this foundation – and all I can say is WOW!!!! It is actually a CC CREAM which means it has excellent coverage without being too heavy. After my skin cancer scare last year, I was delighted to see that this product also has an inbuilt SPF of 50, plus it goes on like a moisturiser rather than a foundation. Not only is it extremely hydrating, but it also contains light-reflecting pigments for instant radiance and an age-defying finish. Every time I apply this foundation, I look in the mirror in amazement! My dull, slightly red ageing skin looks glowing, nourished – and very natural. Without fail I now use this product every day and would never give it up!

‘I LOVE this foundation because it creates a beautiful glow to the skin and can be used lightly or layered for fuller coverage,’ says Dani who is a huge animal lover and campaigner for animal rights. ‘Best of all, it still allows skin to breathe, and of course it is 100% vegan.’

Elf Bite-Size Eyeshadow Palettes

Priced at just £3, these eyeshadow palette are a brilliant beauty buy! The colour choice is immense and the pigmentation is superb! Easy to apply and super-blendable, without being too matt or powdery, my favourite is the Cream & Sugar palette. The only downside for me is that the the packaging is plastic. I would love to see these palettes presented in more sustainable packaging, but I’m guessing that the price would go up!

‘These shadows come in so many beautiful shades and they blend really well!’ says Charlotte.

Too-Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

Well, the name says it all! This is one of Too-Faced’s signature products and one of the best-selling premium mascaras in the US. It’s a collagen-infused formula that lengthens, thickens, and curls. With its sleek matt pink barrel and curvy brush, the design was inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s hourglass figure. The perfect mascara for layering; one coat creates a natural look but if you want real volume, brush on 2 to 3 coats.

‘This mascara is a definite staple in my professional kit,’ says Frances. ‘It creates both length and volume.’

hourglass confession red lipstick review

Hourglass Confession Red Lipstick

This limited-edition vegan lipstick is almost too stylish to hide in your make-up bag! It deserves to be on display! Not only is it stylish, but being refillable, it’s also eco-friendly and has been formulated with a patent-pending replacement for carmine — the industry’s standard red pigment produced from crushed insects. (Did you know that your current red pout could contain crushed insects? Yuk!) The perfect suit-all red, which isn’t always easy to find, it makes your teeth look whiter while flattering your skin. Another bonus is that it stays put for most of the day and I was pleased to see that while sipping drinks, I didn’t leave red any traces of red on my glass! I spotted this lipstick on Get the Gloss, one of my favourite beauty blogs.

Milk Make-up Lip and Cheek

Recommended by Donna, I thought this product looked looked so interesting that I couldn’t wait for it to arrive!. I love the fact that it’s so easy to use. It literally glides over my cheeks and eyelids, then I just blend it with my fingers for a natural, glowy look. Definitely for me, it’s the perfect product as I never spend much time on my make-up, and it really is quick and easy. For daytime, I don’t like full-on lipstick, so this is perfect as it gives a bit of colour without feeling fully made up! Prices start at £16.50 for a mini size, but to be honest, it feels like it will last ages so there’s no need to buy the full size!

‘It’s brilliant on-the-go product that is so easy to use you don’t even need a mirror,’ says Donna. ‘Just swipe over cheeks and lips and pat to blend for a gorgeous, natural glow. I love the ‘Quirk’ shade.’
